The purpose of this blog is to compare the social media accounts of two major companies in the sports world. I chose to analyze Nike and Reebok because they are both brands that I use and am familiar with. I will be analyzing their social media accounts to learn about effective and ineffective ways of social media use.
Critique Both Nike and Reebok are extremely active and update when it comes to the presence on social media. Nike and Reebok both used Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, and LinkedIn, but in different ways. Nike is also present on Snapchat using the Discover page. Reebok, on the other hand, has its presence on Snapchat in the form of filters for certain events or promotions.
Facebook Nike has utilized videos when it comes to Facebook. The best part is that the videos have sound, but have also been designed to be viewed without the sound on. It is embarrassing when you’re in public and goes to look at someone’s Facebook page and he or she has a video and it starts playing out loud. Nike knows nobody wants to be embarrassed, so they have utilized the designing of videos to be effective even without sound. Nike also has a drawing that they are holding. The tickets are $10 a piece and put you in a drawing to win 1 of fewer than 100 pairs of the adaptive-lacing Nike Mag shoes. All of the proceeds go to the Michael J. Fox Foundation to help find a cure for Parkinson’s disease. Nike uses almost all of the same content on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Nike sets out to make their brand known as well as helping and inspiring.
Reebok has used Facebook as a platform to inspire people. Every so often they post a challenge that encourages people to get out and get active. The challenges usually have an incentive of a new pair of shoes or win a customized running program. Reebok aims to get their brand name known as well as its number one objective: to inspire.
Twitter Along with the same content that is on their other social media platforms, Nike posts frequently to twitter. Most of the posts are just a small tidbit and links to its website or other articles that are on their Facebook.
Reebok also uses links to its website of Facebook articles along with small tidbits that are frequently tweeted and kept up-to-date.
Instagram Almost all of the same content is used and used in the same way on Instagram by both Nike and Reebok.
Pinterest Nike only has one account on Pinterest and it is called NikeWomen. On their account there are 37 boards, these boards range from style guides for each season and year, motivation, street clothing by Nike, and spotlights on athletes such as Gabby Douglas and Serena Williams.
Reebok only has one account on Pinterest and it is called Reebok. The account is made up of 12 boards. The boards include men, men’s style, yoga, CrossFit gear, healthy food ideas, and everything in between.
Snapchat Nike does not have a direct account but has Snapchat accounts for Nike Basketball, Nike Football, Nike Soccer, and Nike Running. These accounts all send out snaps that have to do with their name and sport. The all around company uses the Snapchat Discover stories to promote its brand or sponsor an athlete.
Reebok doesn’t have a direct Snapchat or any Snapchat account at all actually. American rapper and songwriter Kendrick Lemar teamed up with Snapchat to make a filter for his Classic’s Kendrick Lemar Manchester event.
LinkedIn Nike uses LinkedIn to post job openings.
Reebok uses LinkedIn just like they do most of their social media to inspire, call to action, and sell their brand.
Nike and Reebok do a great job using social media, they have their shortcomings in some areas, but also kill it in other areas.
Nike is using social media in a constructive and effective way by marketing the drawing for the Nike Mag in partner with the MJFF, they use this as a call to action. It is spotlighting its athletes to not only help themselves but by helping athletes achieve their dreams through Nike’s sponsorship. Nike is being constructive and effective by designing their videos designing their videos so that they are still entertaining and inspiring without the sound on.
Nike can improve its social media in a couple of ways. One of those ways is by getting a Snapchat, Snapchat is one of the most popular social media platforms that many people use daily. It would benefit the company to reach out to through Snapchat so that they are everywhere the customers are even more than they have been. Another way Nike could improve its social media use is by having more than one account on Pinterest or just a new account. NikeWomen on Pinterest is only aiming at women, more than just women use Pinterest so it would benefit them to appeal to a wider audience. One of the best ways to make people pay attention to a company is by making content interactive. Nike should take advantage of this and develop more interactive content so it promotes engagement for its social media accounts.
Reebok is using social media in a constructive and effective way in the fact that their Pinterest account reaches out to more than just women. They reach out to men and women, the boards even have food ideas, workouts, and fashion tips. Another way that Reebok is using social media in a constructive and effective way is that they are being inspirational through honest engagement.
Reebok can improve its social media in a couple of ways. One of those ways being that they should use Snapchat, even though they’ve done filters, they need to do more; have their own account. So that they can be everywhere the customers are since Snapchat has become one of the most popular types of social media. Using LinkedIn to post job openings would help Reebok because they would not only be putting their brand out, they would be finding people to work for them. Reebok should develop more interactive content so it promotes engagement for its social media accounts as well as branch out and post/share different types of content.
